'This Leeds lass comes across like your mum's fave Victoria Wood spitting out the rhymes of Mike Skinner - one much, much less annoying than that sounds. There's fire in Broadhurst's belly and bile in her brain, while her fiery spoken witticisms rock and roar. You can't mosh to poetry, but if you could, then you'd mosh to this.' - NME
"Jamie T meets a darker Mike Skinner." - Artrocker

Review of Saturday's gig

"Penny Broadhurst's new, frank and quite funny new show (not as laugh out loud funny as her pure poetry sets, but that's not the point) is a bit of spoken word poetry, plus music videos with Penny singing along. Sometimes, her husband even turns up to play trumpet - mental! With musical influences from ELO to Kate Bush, with a bit of girl group pop, ska and hip-hop for good measure, it was certainly interesting... Penny's work is often upsetting, and I do sometimes feel like hugging her... it's OK, we feel your pain, and we love that you can make us feel it so well. Someday there will be a CD (I hope)."

Anzir for 4wordsmedia (NB it is not music videos with me singing along - I sing to my own backing tracks until I can afford a suitable backing band, and for this show there were also specially-commissioned visuals that will only travel with me to suitable venues - as with the trumpet!)

My show is TODAY plus in the Guardian plus volunteers wanted!

Yep, my show is 3.30pm in the Carriageworks. £4/£3. COME. Ladyfest Leeds is in the top 3 events nationwide in today's Guardian Guide, giving me a mention, and the music at Joseph's Well is their music pick of the week.

This means hopefully we'll be busy (especially if you lot come). However, we're short of volunteers - if you can do a couple of hours or so can you please drop into the Carriageworks on Millennium Square and let the info stall know? Some people are poorly and it's left us short of ushers and suchlike. Nothing too strenuous.

Check out my mention in the Guardian

Quick Update

There won't be a podcast this month as I've just been too busy with Ladyfest Leeds (this week!). Normal service will be resumed next week.

The comedy show at Ladyfest which I'm curating tomorrow night has already sold out, as have many other events. Make sure you book tickets or week passes ASAP to guarantee your entry into my show, the theatre and dance stuff, the music events (including The Raincoats, The Duloks, Sky Larkin etc) as events are filling up quickly. We need everything to sell out so we can make lots of lovely money for charity (or at least break even). I want you to be there, so please book and a) don't miss out by chancing it on the day and b) don't miss out full stop as I'd love to see you all.

Come to my show and hear some of my songs for the very first time ever and my first live pop gig, a good range of my poems/spoken word and funny things plus see amazing costume and visuals and get a free zine with articles about the process of creating the show and the first preview of artwork from my design competition winners Jamie Woods and Lauren Nightingale.

The phone number to book is 0113 224 3801 or you can drop into the Carriageworks itself (between Revolution and Ha Ha on Millennium Square). We've had some pimpage in the Guardian, Independent and such and BBC7 and local radio and telly have given us a bit of coverage. I'm working very hard on this as are all the other volunteers, so please forgive me all the shouting about it.

Come and say hello!
