Penny Broadhurst interviews Ross Jeffries, a self-styled Speed Seduction Expert who appeared in Louis Theroux' Weird Weekends series and reputedly was the inspiration for the character of Frank TJ Mackey (played by Tom Cruise) in Paul Thomas Anderson's movie Magnolia. This email interview was conducted in 2001.
Why did you come up with the concept of speed seduction?
I wanted a way for men to have choice and power when it comes to selecting women to date and mate; most men settle for women who they ACCIDENTALLY manage to attract. I think the average guy who maybe has only his brains going for him(as opposed to great looks or money or social status) deserves a chance at some choice and happiness. Speed Seduction is designed for SMART GUYS who are tired of being the big brother, buddy, friend but never the lover or bed-partner!
Why do you think it works?
Because it works on the laws of suggestions to capture and lead a woman's imagination and emotions and bypasses her FIRST response which is usually based on the way a guy looks. It teaches guys to change their "vibe" and how they communicate to get past a lack of ability to impress by looks, money, social status, etc.
Does it bother you that a lot of people who watched you on Weird Weekends think you're sleazy?
I personally didn't get that response; I got lots of supportive email. But usually when people say that sort of stupid comment, they are simply uninformed and not getting what I do at all. To me, this work is about empowering men to have choice. Only people who HATE men believe men must, by nature, ABUSE that power and choice. That's anti-male and sexist thinking on THEIR part and very ignorant too!
Why did you choose to take part in the programme?
The producer seemed to be intelligent, Louis sounded like fun to work with, and my British friends said the program was smart, popular and funny.
What did you make of the experience?
I enjoyed it thoroughly; Louis is quite good at what he does and we
understood each other immediately. I even said to him, "Your whole act is to underplay things and be the normal person surrounded by "nuts". You take the piss out of people by playing along and keeping a straight face, but I know exactly what you do!"
That seemed to impress him and build some real rapport!
Is speed seduction financially lucrative?
I'm not sure how you would measure that and I never talk about my finances, but let's say I am adequately rewarded for my work in many ways, and leave it at that.
Would you agree that it's strange?
It's unconventional; does that make it "weird" or "freaky"? Sitting on the outside, looking in through the eyes of someone who merely wants to ridicule and NOT understand, it could look "weird". So what; to me, DATING, which requires men to BEG and BUY women's favors is "weird" and "freaky".
Would it work for any man?
Any man who has some extra brains to understand it and the patience to work with it and master it. Stupid people will not be able to make this work; it's not a magic bullet and it isn't for the undisciplined or stupid.
What sort of reaction do you get from people who recognise you, or who meet you and then find out what you do?
I tell women what I do right off the bat, and they tend to love it! Those who don't walk away and save me AND themselves time and trouble.
Has there ever been anyone you've really liked and failed to seduce?
Hmmmm...well, nothing works all the time. I'm sure it's happened but I tend to just forget those poor, unfortunate women who weren't sharp enough to get it!
Do you think speed seduction is misogynistic?
I don't think it's misogynistic, in fact, women naturally do lots of what I have to TEACH men to do.
Has your profile increased since appearing on Weird Weekends?
I've been popular in England for a while now, and the show has increased that popularity. The Brits seem to love the "wacky" Yanks!
How and why did you get started in this business in the first place?
I fell in love with NLP in 1987 and decided I'd devote myself to studying it. Speed Seduction grew out of applying NLP to the challenge of being successful and having choice with women.
Is it a job or a vocation?
A calling....
What's your client satisfaction rate?

What do you do in your spare time, what are your real passions?
Language, magic, religion, AVIATION, cats, music, dance, scuba, astronomy!!!!!
Final comments:
I'll only say people should take a look at my work before they allow the media "laughter curtain" to prejudge things for them. They can read my newsletters, FREE at my website. Plenty of free stuff to try out. See how well it works for you and then and ONLY then, AFTER you see the results, should you consider ordering any of the paid stuff, which works even better. I can't make it safer or more fair than that.
And just because ideas are unconventional; just because they stand outside of the normal way of doing and thinking about things, doesn't make them "wrong" or "freaky". And the only people who think that empowering men MUST be done at the expense of women are people who loathe, hate, and distrust men and want to stop men from having choice and power. And to those kind of people I proudly say, "Kiss my CAT'S ass; you ain't worthy of touching mine with your lips!"
